Equipment

  • Large pot or Dutch oven
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Colander

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh green beans trimmed
  • 4 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt adjust as needed
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp sugar optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Green Beans

  • Rinse the green beans under cold water and trim the ends. If some beans are longer than others, you can cut them in half for even cooking.

Step 2: Cook the Bacon

  • In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. The smell alone will tell you you’re on the right track. Remove excess grease if needed, but leave a little behind—it’s full of flavor.

Step 3: Sauté the Aromatics

  • Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until soft and slightly golden. Stir occasionally so it doesn’t burn. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Step 4: Add Green Beans and Broth

  • Add the green beans directly into the pot, followed by the chicken broth. Stir gently to combine everything.

Step 5: Season and Simmer

  • Add salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and sugar. Cover the pot and reduce heat to low. Let it simmer for about 30–35 minutes. Stir occasionally.

Step 6: Check and Serve

  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. The beans should be tender but not falling apart. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Don’t rush the simmering process
  • Taste before adding extra salt
  • Use fresh beans for best texture
  • Stir occasionally to prevent sticking
